Preliminary Field Survey for Bioremediation in Response to Sea Level Rise in Surabaya City

    1. Project Overview

This project focuses on preliminary field surveys aimed at addressing sea level rise in Surabaya by progressively purifying water and soil pollution in industrial and urban areas through bioremediation. Sites like coastal areas, wetlands, mangrove forests, river regions, and visits to ITS University were conducted to assess the feasibility of bioremediation.

    2. Field Survey and Visit Details

Coastal and Wetland Areas: Directly impacted by rising sea levels, these areas are crucial for biodiversity and ecosystem services. Wetlands, known for their natural purification capabilities, are expected to play a significant role in the bioremediation project.

Mangrove Forests: Investigated for their effectiveness in coastal protection and water purification, with potential expansion evaluated.

ITS University: Collaborated with the university’s research team to discuss the possibilities for research and development in bioremediation techniques, using the university’s resources and expertise to seek sustainable solutions for the community.

    3. Challenges and Issues

Rising sea levels contribute to urban and industrial flooding, exacerbating water pollution issues. Developing sustainable bioremediation strategies is essential, necessitating community cooperation and support.

    4. Conclusion and Recommendations

This preliminary survey provided essential data for addressing water pollution issues in Surabaya through bioremediation. Further research and collaboration will be necessary to plan and implement bioremediation projects in the area.
